stitching up a story (or poem) . . .

It’s always been that whenever I sewed, I came up with new ideas for writing projects. And while I was writing, I wanted to (and often did) start a new quilt. Even though I have more time now, I am sewing less than I used to, so I’ve decided to take a month off from writing, and start a sewing project or two.

Working on this quilt led me to write the poems in I Lay My Stitches Down: Poems of American Slavery.

I know of other writers who busy themselves around the garden, or swim laps, or wash windows, to rejuvenate their writing practice. For me, it is sewing. My hope is that I as sew for the next 4-6 weeks, I will be more than ready for NaNoWriMo!

Here are a couple of quilted table runners I made in 2015.
