It has been a l-o-o-o-o-ng four-and-a-half years since my first book, I Lay My Stitches Down: Poems of American Slavery, was published, but finally, my new book, Like a Bird: The Art of the American Slave Song, is here. It is my second book, and my second book illustrated by Michele Wood. Michele has painted her interpretations of thirteen spirituals, and I have written about her paintings and the songs. You can pre-order it online now, and you will find it in bookstores on September 1.
Between now and then, though, it’s back and forth to the post office. I’m about halfway through a large postcard blast. The postcards were designed by graphic artist Sierra Fong. Sierra makes bookmarks, too, but the ones you see here came from my publisher, Millbrook Press/Lerner Publishing Group.
